Keane Resigns

Roy Keane has resigned as manager of Sunderland after 27 months in charge.

Keane, 37, took over in 2006 but chose to step down with the club lying 18th in the Premier League following five defeats in six matches.

First team coach Ricky Sbragia has been placed in temporary charge, assisted by coaches Neil Bailey and Dwight Yorke.

"Roy's decision sums up his desire to always do what is best for the club, despite the club's efforts to keep him," said chairman Niall Quinn.

"Roy deserves huge respect for his contribution and the manner in which he guided the club from the depths of the Championship back to the Premier League.

Niall Quinn expresses his disappointment at the departure of Roy Keane
"His winning mentality and singled mindedness were just what this club needed. Even in his departure he has been more concerned for the welfare of the players and his staff than himself.

"The board has reluctantly accepted his decision and wish him and his family well for the future."

Cesc keen to learn from legends

Cesc Fabregas plans to speak with Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira after being appointed as the Gunners' new skipper.

Fabregas was confirmed as the new holder of the armband at Emirates Stadium on Monday after William Gallas was stripped of the role at the weekend.

Gallas' outspoken criticism of his team-mates led to him being replaced as captain and left out of the squad for Saturday's defeat at Manchester City, although he returned to the starting XI for the clash with Dynamo Kiev.

Gifted young midfielder Fabregas insists his new responsibility will not change his playing style and he plans to speak with former captains Henry and Vieira as he looks to settle into the role.

Fresh start
Writing in his first programme notes, Fabregas said: "I am not a big shouter and to be honest I will not change my playing style now that I am captain.

"I will try to lead by example first of all which I have always tried to do anyway. Away from the pitch, I will try to be normal, be myself, and with the help of everyone else at the club I am sure we can get through this bad period and have a fresh new start this season.

"I am lucky enough to have played under three great captains since I joined Arsenal and I would definitely like to take things from each of them.

"Patrick Vieira was a truly amazing captain. He led by example, in the dressing room he was always relaxed, making jokes, talking to the guys - he was one of us. He never said too much before the games, but on the pitch you always knew you could count on him to go to war with you.

"Thierry was the best player in the world when he was here and was definitely a guy you knew would always be there at the decisive moment.

"I still speak to Thierry on the phone occasionally and will ask him about it. I have lost touch with Patrick a bit, but I would love to speak to him too about the job because he has so much experience."

Respect
Fabregas also paid tribute to Gallas, who had come under increasing scrutiny ever since his bizarre response to the emotional draw with Birmingham in February last year, when he sat alone and close to tears in the centre-circle at the final whistle.

"I have a great respect for William," the Spain international added.

"A lot of people from the outside have been very unfair with him because he is a great guy, a great professional and he always tries to do everything to help this club.

"You can never doubt his commitment to the club. It has been spot on since the first day and he has been a big, big player for us."

Brazil 6 - 2 Portugal (First half)

Brazil 6 - 2 Portugal (Second Half)

A Luis Fabiano hat-trick powered Brazil to a 6-2 victory over Portugal in Brasilia on Wednesday.

The win was a reprieve for embattled Brazil coach Dunga, whose team had been held scoreless in three consecutive home games in World Cup qualifying.

However, the defeat increases pressure on new Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz as his country slipped to their heaviest defeat to Brazil.

Danny opened the scoring for the visitors on four minutes, but Fabiano equalised shortly after following a break down the left by Robinho.

And the Sevilla striker then put Brazil ahead in the 25th minute with a shot on the turn from Kaka's pass.

The second half produced four goals in a 10-minute spell as Maicon scored and Fabiano completed his hat-trick.

Simao Sabrosa pulled one back for Portugal, only for Manchester City midfielder Elano to net before Adriano completed the rout.

Scotland 0 - 1 Argentina POST match interview

Scotland 0 - 1 Argentina

Tuesday 18 November 2008

Diego Maradona has brushed aside Terry Butcher's simmering tension ahead of Scotland's friendly against Argentina, live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1.

Butcher, now assistant manager to Scotland boss George Burley, was in the England side beaten by Argentina in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico when Maradona scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal.

That moment made him public enemy No.1 in England but a hero to Scotland supporters, and Butcher admitted on Tuesday that he would never forgive Maradona and will not shake his hand on the touchline.

The legendary forward, speaking at a press conference live on Sky Sports News, raised his eyebrows when told of Butcher's stance but insisted he would not be distracted.

Alive
Speaking through an interpreter, Maradona said: "I am not going to seek him out, I don't know why Butcher is taking this attitude. If people are fine with me I will greet them.

"I just don't understand why Butcher would take this attitude. Let Butcher get on with his own life and I'll get on with my life.

"I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, if he doesn't shake my hand, I'll still be alive tomorrow."

Maradona, arguably the greatest player ever to grace the football field, is aware of his iconic status in Scotland and is keen to repay the Tartan Army with a memorable match on Wednesday night
